coursera, Introducing The Global Translator Community!

We believe that everyone should have access to a high-quality education, and our community is a reflection of that: Courserians live in every country in the world, come from all walks of life, and speak dozens — if not hundreds — of languages.

But together, we want to do more to make a great education possible for learners of all backgrounds.

As a step towards that vision, we are excited to announce the launch of theGlobal Translator Community (GTC). The GTC is a community of dedicated individuals and partner organizations working together to provide subtitle translations for Coursera-hosted courses. The GTC offers participants an opportunity to become members of a tight-knit community, earn recognition for their contributions, and — most importantly — help millions of learners across the globe. And for learners, the GTC promises to make more content more available in more languages.

Visit our Global Translator Community page to join us, and to learn more about the program. And visit our course catalogue to enjoy the wide variety of courses already available with subtitle translations.

Thank you!

Yours in learning without limits,

Google finally combines text and chat conversations in Hangouts

Google is crossing off a major complaint about Hangouts this week: the messaging app will finally merge your SMS and Hangouts conversations.  Users can pick between Hangouts and SMS when sending a given message, but that's it. There's no option to use Hangouts with SMS as a fallback option, which is the approach Apple takes with iMessage.

Google also promises that "different message types will be easy to tell apart in the conversation," but it's not as obvious as the company lets on. Your received messages all look the same, with only a small "via SMS" label below texted replies. Sent messages easier to tell apart with a glance; they're green when you're sending regular Hangouts messages, and white when sent as an SMS message. Users that don't like the merged view can revert back to the old style to keep things separate.

Google Launches Chrome Remote Desktop App for Android

Google's Chrome Remote Desktop service, first launched in 2011, is coming to mobile. Today, the company released an Android app that will let users access their desktop computers, whether through a Chrome web app for Mac, PC, and Linux or through Chrome OS itself. Once you've set up your primary machine, you can launch the Android app to connect to it. GigaOm reported a few days ago that the app was in beta testing, but it's now available to anyone with an Android phone or tablet, though doing much with the former will be a little cramped. There's no precise date given for an iOS version, but Google says it will be coming later this year.
App Description:
Securely access your computers from your Android device.
• On each of your computers, set up remote access using the Chrome Remote Desktop app from Chrome Web Store: https://chrome.google.com/remotedesktop
• On your Android device, open the app and tap on any of your online computers to connect.
For information about privacy, please see the Google Privacy Policy (http://goo.gl/SyrVzj) and the Chrome Privacy Policy (http://goo.gl/0uXE5d).

worried about heartbleed lastpass security check has you covered

All those Websites needing new passwords to protect yourself against Heartbleed attacks may look daunting in LastPass' Security Checker, but it's a heck of a lot easier than looking for them by hand.
LastPass has always been an excellent Web browser password management program. In Heartbleed's ugly security aftermath, the company's new Heartbleed-aware Security Check feature turns it into a great password manager.

You see one of the most annoying things about trying to protect yourself against sites that have potentially left you open to Heartbleed-based attacks is that it's not enough for a site to patch its OpenSSL software. It must also update its Secure-Socket Layer (SSL) certificates. Until both steps have been taken it's still won't be safe to update your password.

Tumblr : An important security update

Urgent security update Bad news. A major vulnerability, known as “Heartbleed,” has been disclosed for the technology that powers encryption across the majority of the internet. That includes Tumblr. We have no evidence of any breach and, like most networks, our team took immediate action to fix the issue. But this still means that the little lock icon (HTTPS) we all trusted to keep our passwords, personal emails, and credit cards safe, was actually making all that private information accessible to anyone who knew about the exploit. This might be a good day to call in sick and take some time to change your passwords everywhere—especially your high-security services like email, file storage, and banking, which may have been compromised by this bug. You’ll be hearing more in the news over the coming days. Take care.

Amazon Fire TV: First Impressions Review

Do you have any HDMI slots left on your TV? Didn’t think so – but you can’t blame Amazon for entering the streaming device market given its existing arsenal of entertainment and readily available data on competitors’ devices. Indeed, this makes sense. Amazon is the world’s largest online retailer, and receives thousands of users reviews for the Apple TV, Google Chromecast, Roku, and smart TVs. Why wouldn’t it use this data to its own benefit, even if it is slightly late to the table?

The Amazon Fire TV is available today in the US for $99, with an optional game controller for $40.

Google Keep Gets Fast Search for Text in Images [Video]

Google is rolling out an update to its Evernote rival Keep that introduces the ability to search for text in photos uploaded to the service. While Evernote has had this feature for a long time, we found that Google’s implementation located text in images instantly. Evernote, on the other hand, took a few minutes after a data sync to index the images that we tested. That said, Keep doesn’t highlight the searched phrase in the images it displays, which may be a downer for some.

You've sent us ideas for features you want, and told us what you like (and didn't like...). So while it may be our birthday, we want to say thank you to you with a gift that is, well, all about you. When custom themes launched back in 2012, we urged you to find “your perfect image and make Gmail your own.” And you did. Many of you rushed to take photos of yourselves to upload as your Gmail custom theme, which you started referring to as selfies.
